Our Level Two Introduction to Photography will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to take your passion for photography to the next level. You will be introduced to the fundamental principles of digital and analogue photography practices and will gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic relationship between techniques, process, materials, and concepts.

From mastering manual camera settings and composition principles to exploring the nuances of darkroom practices and digital printing, you will acquire a unique skill set that bridges the gap between the material culture of analogue photography and the dynamic innovations of the digital image making. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a creative and hands-on course, culminating in a portfolio of work that showcases your creative and technical innovation.

Course Details

This course is intended for students who want to progress to a career in Photography and will cover the following content:

The Foundations of Photography:

  • Visual Language
  • Composition
  • Lighting for Photography
  • Framing

Camera Operation:

  • Learning the functions and settings of both analogue and digital cameras, exploring the technical and creative nuances of exposure, focus, aperture, ISO, and shutter speed.

Darkroom Practice:

  • Exploring traditional film development, hand printing, and experimenting with alternative darkroom techniques.

Digital Workflow:

  • Learning the process of archiving and editing images in a non-destructive manner using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Specialist Equipment:

  • Exploring traditional and modern cameras, lenses, and accessories available for both analogue and digital photography.

Conceptual Frameworks:

  • Developing the ability to apply a technical skillset to a conceptual photographic project.

Story Telling and Narrative:

  • Learning how to convey narrative and emotion through visual storytelling.

Development of Photography:

  • Exploring the historical development of photography and the traditional roots of image making that still impact contemporary photography practices.

Critical Analysis and Evaluation:

  • Learning how to analyse and evaluate your own work and the work of other photographers and artists.

Ethics in Photography Practices

  • Understanding and implementing the ethical, moral, and legal aspects of photography, including ongoing issues such as copyright, consent, and responsible image sharing in the digital era.

Portfolio Development:

  • Developing a diverse and cohesive portfolio of photographic images, showcasing skills and knowledge in both traditional and contemporary photography.

No prior qualifications are required to enrol on this course.

It is open to individuals of all levels, from beginners with a keen interest in photography, to those looking to refine their skills.

Assessment Method

Assessment for this course is primarily through coursework, practical assignments, and portfolio development.

Students will have the opportunity to showcase their understanding of photography concepts through hands-on projects and digital portfolio submissions.

Where can I progress to?

Upon successful completion of the Level 2 Award in Photography, students may choose to progress to higher-level photography courses or pursue specialized areas of interest within the field.

This qualification also serves as a solid foundation for those considering a career in photography or related creative industries.
